Chicken-Fried Steak & Gravy
Chicken-Fried Steak & Gravy is a classic Southern dish made with a tenderized steak that is coated in a thick batter and fried until golden brown. It is typically served with a rich and flavorful gravy.


  • 1 pound cube steak
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper


  1. In a shallow dish, combine the salt and pepper.
  2. Dredge the cube steak in the flour mixture until well coated.
  3. In a separate shallow dish, whisk together the egg and milk.
  4. Dip the coated steak in the egg mixture, then dredge again in the flour mixture.
  5. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  6. Add the coated steak to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside.
  8. In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
  9. Whisk in the flour until smooth.
  10. Gradually whisk in the beef broth until the gravy is smooth and thickened.
  11. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  12. Return the steak to the skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes, or until heated through.
  13. Serve immediately with your favorite sides.
